City officials have declared Santa Ana a sanctuary for immigrants regardless of their status in the country in response to Donald Trump's election as president.
The Orange County Register reports the city council voted 5-0 Tuesday to adopt a resolution stating Santa Ana won't use its resources to enforce immigration laws.
The move comes after Trump campaigned on promises to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border and called for tougher immigration enforcement.
Officials also asked city staff to draft an ordinance that would go further than the resolution and took steps to phase out Santa Ana's contract to house immigrant detainees for the federal government at its jail.
Nearly half of Santa Ana's 335,000 residents are foreign-born.
