President Enrique Peña Nieto ratified his decision to have Mexico follow the path of free trade, in the occasion of his closing speech of the 13th Mexican Foreign Trade Congress (COMCE) in León, Guanajuato, where he also awarded the National Export Prize.
He highlighted that Mexico seeks to expand its presence in South America, Europe, Asia, as well as to seek a win-win approach to the upgrade of the NAFTA with the U.S. He added that “The commercial policy of Mexico goes beyond junctures, this has to do with the state policy that has been built between businessmen and government throughout three decades in our effort to advance in the path of free trade and regional inclusion”.
President Peña noted that while protectionism is hoisted elsewhere, Mexico will remain firm in its commitment with free trade worldwide, he added that “the world is going through a moment of uncertainty” and urged all players to work hand in hand “I have made a call for national unity.. we have to come together despite our political or societal differences so as to build a better nation and create scenarios that result in major opportunities for future generations”.
He added that Mexico is promoting the access of Mexican produce in the European market and he reminded that negotiations have been opened to upgrade the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Union: “This upgrade and modernization of our mutual agreement will permit that more Mexican products have a relevant presence in this important market”.
President Peña said that Mexico must consider the Asian region as an economical ally as it has reported a 5% growth in recent years and noted Mexico’s participation in the commercial negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
