At the 40th annual National Mole Fair, which runs from October 1 – 23, the San Pedro Atocpan community expects over 600,000 local and out-of-state visitors.
According to local government officials, San Pedro Atocpan, a community in the outskirts of Mexico City, is a major producer of mole and 90% of its inhabitants work in the mole industry.
Every year, the Mexico City neighborhood produces approximately 3,650 tons of mole, which is about 60% of the mole consumed in all of Mexico.
At the fair, almond mole is the most popular, but guests will also be able to taste and buy other kinds of mole, such as the poblano, green mole, pipián and adobo.
There will also be enchiladas, tamales, romeritos, rabbit, turkey, chicken, duck and other dishes with mole.
This event also aims for producers in Mexico City's rural area to sell their products directly to the public in public spaces and plazas, without the need of any middlemen.
40 restaurants and 23 mole producers will have booths at the fair.
Guests can also buy locally made arts and crafts and taste locally grown turkey.
