President Enrique Peña Nieto told reporters today he is in Colombia to witness the historic signing of the peace agreement between Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos and The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
“This is a historic peace agreement that finally puts an end to the armed guerrilla movement in Colombia; a first in Latin America,” said Peña Nieto in a press statement today.
He said that after 52 years of armed conflict, there will finally be peace in Colombia and Mexico shows its commitment by actively participating in the landmine removal initiative in Colombia.
As part of its commitment, Mexico pledged one million dollars for the Global Landmine Removal Initiative, which is already underway in several regions of Colombia, the second country with the most landmines after Afghanistan.
The anti-personnel landmines, which were placed throughout Colombia by the illegal armed militias, are an unconventional weapon that have mutilated and killed thousands of civilians, military personnel and police officers over time.
Peña Nieto pledged his commitment to the United Nation's mission to verify and disarm the FARC, which as of today is recognized in Colombia as a legitimate political party as part of the peace agreement.
Peña Nieto reiterated his support for Colombia, which he referred to as a “sister nation.”
