Mayor of San Juan Chamula shot dead

The Office of the Attorney General of the State (PGJE) confirmed the death of Mayor of San Juan Chamula, Domingo López González, and government administrator, Narciso Lunes Hernández.

According to initial reports, around 7:00 am today a group of people from 35 surrounding towns arrived to the main plaza in the municipality of Los Altos de Chiapas, in order to talk to the authorities.

The protesters were exposing various disagreements and demanding resources for public works when unidentified men opened fire. 

The shooting also left seven wounded who were taken to the hospital in San Cristobal de las Casas. 

The Special Prosecutor for Indigenous Justice carries out the investigations to arrest those responsible for the attack.
