The Archdiocese of Mexico applauded the "deserved punishment vote" against the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), that lost 7 of 12 governorships on June 5 elections.
It said that the "electoral disaster" was the reaction of society to the initiative presented by President Enrique Peña Nieto to legalize gay marriages and let homosexual couples adopt children.
The message adds to the campaign undertaken by the Catholic Church and a dozen religious institutions against the proposal submitted on May 17, which included swaying parishioners on their vote, as EL UNIVERSAL documented in Aguascalientes.
In the editorial of the weekly publication “Desde la fe”, distributed every Sunday in every parish in Mexico City, the Archdiocese noted that "the mature attitude of many Mexicans who voted" is to be applauded.
The publication noted that "there is no doubt that society, dissatisfied with this destructive and immoral imposition, has reacted and cast a protest vote against the President and his political party, that has approved gay marriages in several state despite the society's disapproval."
The editorial added that "the president and his party should respect society, that demands the withdrawal of the proposal to give false rights to homosexuals, who can be given a legal alternative other than marriage to safeguard their real rights."
On May President Enrique Peña Nieto proposed a national initiative of "marriage without discrimination" to ensure that same-sex people can marry in all Mexican states.
The editorial also says that "the government has the responsibility to address the problems that are truly serious, such as insecurity, the free fall of the economy, fighting corruption and to regain a true vocation of service to society that is not willing to ignore the cynicism, corruption and immorality."
