The President of the Mexican Senate, Roberto Gil Zuarth said that he supports the regularization of poppy production, aiming at its medical use.
Zuarth, from the right-wing National Action Party, said that the current debate about cannabis will open the door to a discussion about the use and regularization of poppy and the next period of sessions in Congress could see a debate on the subject.
"I favor finding a regulatory solution to the poppy question," expressed Zuarth, an active promoter of a paradigm shift regarding drugs.
He added that it is a "folly that Mexico is the fourth largest global producer of opium poppy, and not use morphine for the production of medications to treat medium and intense pain."
He added that the situation is even worse because morphine is being imported into the country for medical purposes.
Zuarth added that to make things worse, "many of our farmers are being murdered, strongly coerced by crime" to produce poppies in places like the states of Guerrero, Michoacán, Chihuahua and Durango.
