The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) received the notification from a judge about the viability of the extradition of Joaquín Guzmán Loera to the United States, in order to face charges for homicide and drug crimes, among other offenses.
The SRE said in a press release that it will take 20 working days to consider the extradition request, as set by the International Extradition Act.
"The Government of Mexico will not analyze the guilt or innocence of the accused in the claimed in the crimes with which he is charged in another country," expressed the SRE.
Last week, another judge made the same determination on a separate extradition request from a federal court in California.
If the SRE approves either extradition request, Guzmán's lawyers have the ability to appeal, making it possible that the extradition of the leader of the Sinaloa cartel could still be months away.
