Jorge Ramos, a Mexican and American journalist, said that it is perfectly possible that Donald Trump becomes the next U.S. president, and added that considering him a “clown” or a media phenomenon is very dangerous.
Considered one of the most influential voices of the Hispanic community in the United States, Ramos believes he has the authority to question the powerful, demand accountability and defend the weak, ideas that he discusses in his new book "Take a Stand: Lessons From Rebels".
In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL, Ramos said that Donald Trump is a danger for Mexico, not only because of the number of migrants that could be deported, but also because of the trade war that his policies could unleash between the United States and Mexico and even lead to the disappearance of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
In his opinion all Mexicans, in the United States and abroad, should express their rejection of Trump and he criticized that President Enrique Peña Nieto took 265 days to reply to the Republican hopeful.
Speaking about journalism in Mexico, Ramos, who emigrated to the United States when he was 24, regretted that more than 80 journalists have been killed in two decades in Mexico, a nation that is not at war. He added that despite the progress in terms of freedom of speech, Mexico's Presidency continues to exert direct censorship.
Ramos explained that after Trump said on June 15 that Mexicans are criminals, drug dealers and rapists he sent him a handwritten letter with his cell phone number and that instead of replying to him, Trump published the letter with his cell phone, reason for which Ramos had to change his number.
