The Office of the Attorney General of the State of Mexico (PGJEM) reported that the mayor of Jilotzingo Juan Antonio Mayén Saucedo, who was just killed this morning, allegedly had links to a criminal leader murdered a couple months ago.
The office added that the man was the leader of a local criminal organization, but any other details, as well as his identity, have not been revealed.
The vehicle used by Mayén Saucedo, his two bodyguards, and two policemen, was apparently intercepted by armed men on board a van, who shot them more than a 100 times.
José Manzur Quiroga, State of Mexico's Secretary of Government, added that all leads will be followed and the state authorities are working with the federal government.
"We will go after those responsible and we will be transparent while doing so," he said.
