Mancera denies that influenza situation is minimized in Mexico City

The Mayor of Mexico City, Miguel Ángel Mancera, said that the authorities are not minimizing the influenza situation in the country.

"It is not minimized or something like that. On the contrary, it is pretty clear that this is not an epidemiological alert, but we are working with all our capacity in Mexico City".

In an interview, the mayor expressed that there are 180 confirmed cases of influenza in the nation's capital city.

The head of the Department of Health, Armando Ahued Ortega, reiterated that there are plenty of anti-influenza drugs available in the city to deal with the disease.

"There is no drug supply shortage. We are protected. The federal Ministry of Health has an important reserve, and each state, if it wants some, can request it," he said.

Ahued Ortega insisted that the cases of the disease in Mexico City are seven percent below the ones from the previous year, but warned against an increase of respiratory diseases in the coming weeks because the winter season continues.

"We are going to face a couple of weeks with an increase in respiratory diseases. Therefore, we ask people to get vaccinated, avoid the cold, and take vitamin C and liquids," he added.

Ahued Ortega also pointed out that as the weather allows for higher temperatures in the city, the cases of influenza will be less and less.
