Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto enacted the political reform of Mexico City, which means the end of its status as Federal District and transformation into another state of the country.
In a ceremony at the National Palace, Peña Nieto signed the bill in company of current mayor Miguel Angel Mancera, who promoted the initiative and will have a new authority as governor.
The City of Mexico will remain as the nation's capital and seat of the federal Congress.
The districts of the city will become municipalities, headed by mayors.
Subsequently to the enactment of the reform, the National Electoral Institute (INE) will issue a call for the creation of a constitution for the new state.
