The U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona says agents helped reunite a mother and her baby after they were separated by a smuggler during an attempt to cross into the United States illegally.
Agents near Douglas, Arizona, apprehended a woman who was carrying a child about 15 months old around midnight on Wednesday. Agents learned the toddler wasn't hers.
About two hours later, they found a Mexican woman who said she was looking for her child after they were separated while trying to scale a border fence.
The woman told agents she had fallen off the fence on the Mexico side and injured herself. A smuggler took the child and told her the Border Patrol would take care of him.
The agency says the mother and child were in good health. It's unclear whether they were deported.
