Former Mexican first lady asks for cannabis debate

Former Mexican first lady Margarita Zavala expressed that the discussion about the legalization of the personal use and production of cannabis for recreational purposes, currently in the Supreme Court of Justice, must be given in a wide-ranging debate.

Zavala added that the topic must be considered in Congress and in society through a public consultation.

The wife of former President Felipe Calderón said that these issues, due to their importance, should not remain only in discussion in the Supreme Court.

"Without any doubt there are issues that we have to discuss more broadly. I say it here in the premises of the Senate of the Republic, which is part of the Congress, where hopefully they will look for a discussion on the subject," she said to media during the presentation of the book "Memoirs of an Ambassador" (Memorias de un Embajador), by former senator Héctor Federico Ling Altamirano.

Zavala coincided with the national president of her National Action Party, Ricardo Anaya, on this topic for a discussion on the subject.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to discuss this a proposal that could legalize the personal use and cultivation of cannabis in Mexico.
