"Businessmen have had to close their shops and even leave Mexico City because Los Zetas extort them," Isabel Miranda de Wallace, chairwoman of the NGO Alto al Secuestro, said.
She added that organized crime operates in the capital city even if mayor Miguel Ángel Mancera denies it.
Miranda explained that La Familia Michoacana was displaced by Los Zetas, a split-off cell of the Gulf Cartel.
At a press conference, the activist said that she has documented at least six cases of entrepreneurs who had to close their businesses in Condesa neighborhood and Mexico City downtown.
She added that so far this year, 1,343 kidnappings have been registed in Mexico, compared with a total of 1,886 in 2014.
In September, the states with the largest number of kidnappings were State of Mexico (37), Tamaulipas (23), Mexico City (13), Guerrero (11), Veracruz (9) and Zacatecas (7).
