U.S. Customs and Border Protection say a Border Patrol agent fired his weapon across the international border near Naco after seeing someone in Mexico allegedly pointing a weapon at him.
CBP officials say the unidentified agent was making an arrest on the U.S. side of the border around 6:25 a.m. Monday when he saw a person he believed was pointing a gun at him from the Mexico side.
They say the agent feared for his life and fired in the direction of the person. It’s still unknown if anybody was hit on the Mexican side of the border.
Mexican authorities responded to the incident scene and CBP sent a Use of Force Incident Team.
CBP also has notified the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General about the incident.
