The attitude of the Mexican government in light of the report submitted by the Interdisciplinary Group of International Experts (GIEI) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on the Ayotzinapa case is positive because it accepted its recommendations and will refocus the investigation, expressed the Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis de Almagro.
In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL, Almagro Lemes expressed that the findings of the report pointing out at the physical impossibility for the 43 teachers in training to be incinerated in the garbage dump of Cocula the night of September 27, 2014, open a new stage in the investigations.
He added that it could help the search of justice and to have Mexico advance into the fight against impunity since the report of the Expert Group of the IACHR also "opens new lines of research" in the case.
"We find positive the reaction of the Mexican government in regard to considering the report as its own and the need to follow the recommendations presented by the experts. This means an important contribution to the combat against impunity, and it means that there is an interest into building a more fair Mexico society," he stressed out.
He added that the Mexican government had "the dignity of accepting its mistakes" and to meet the recommendations of the IACHR, so it's an important step in the fight against impunity and the acceptance by the federal government that civil society can make contributions.
However, he warned that there is still a long way to go in the fight against impunity, and the OAS will continue to support Mexico through the Inter-American system of human rights with "rigorous scientific and professional contributions".
“We will hope that those contributions are those that will support the truth, justice, the basic aims of this investigation," he expressed.
