EPN meets with Ban Ki-moon in New York

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto held a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to discuss various topics and endorse the historic commitment of Mexico with the principles of the organization towards international peace and security.

The meeting aimed to strengthen the relationship between Mexico and the UN, which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary.

Peña Nieto thanked the support given to Mexico by the international community since the announcement of the resumption of their participation in peacekeeping operations (PKO), and briefed the Secretary General on the progress made by our country in such operations.

For its part, Ban Ki-Moon congratulated Mexico on the successful holding of the First Conference of States Parties of the Arms Trade Treaty, held in Cancún on August 24 to 27, 2015.

Peña Nieto also expressed Mexico's satisfaction for the adoption of the final document of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Mexican leader also welcomed the upcoming Special Session of the U.N. General Assembly on drugs, to be held next year, and reaffirmed the need to find a new strategy focused upon the welfare of the individual that will meet the new realities and challenges of that global problem.

Peña Nieto was accompanied by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Claudia Ruiz Massieu; Economy, Ildefonso Guajardo; Public Function, Virgilio Andrade; and Environment and Natural Resources, Rafael Pacchiano; as well as by the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the U.N, Jorge Montano, and by the chief of the Office of the Presidency, Francisco Guzmán.

Also present were the Mexicans with the highest rank in the UN System: Carlos Ruiz Massieu, president of the Trusteeship Council of the multilateral agency; María Eugenia Casar, Deputy General Secretary and assistant administrator of the United Nations Development Program, and Alicia Barcena, executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Peña Nieto also met his counterpart in the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, with whom he spoke about King William's visit to Mexico, among other topics.
