Julio César Moreno, chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, asked Alejandro Argudín, director of Mexico City International Airport, to explain the protocols used to prevent criminals from planting drugs in the luggage of passengers coming from South and Central America.
The member of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) said that it was unfortunate that one of the busiest airports in the world and the second largest in Latin America has registered undesirable cases such as those of Óscar Alvaro Montes de Oca, a student, and Angélica López, a dancer, who allegedly got cocaine "planted" in their luggage.
Moreno also urged the Ministry of Communications and Transport (SCT) and the Office of Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA) to improve security and protection for domestic and foreign passengers.
"It is embarrassing that despite having high-tech equipment at Mexico City airport there is no video evidence to help identify the real culprits of planting drugs in luggage and other crimes," Moreno said.
He added that if this problem is not eradicated, "it would show that there is corruption at all levels within the airport."
