A year after his arrest, the founder of the self-defense forces of Michoacán, José Manuel Mireles Valverde, could regain his freedom, after the Office of the Attorney General (PGR) decided not to further pursue a request to validate an appeal in his favor, presented in March.
Yesterday, Attorney General Arely Gómez met with Virginia Mireles, sister of Mr. Miretes, to inform her about the decision.
Virginia Mireles confirmed that her brother will be free, but will not return to Michoacán because he needs an urgent surgery in the back because he has been semi-paralyzed from the waist down for the last few weeks.
Javier Livas, lawyer of Mireles Valverde, expressed that the PGR should desist from any more actions against his client.
"He can free, but subject to the presentation of new evidence against him," he said.
He stated that there is no date for his presentation before Judge Jorge Armando Wong, the magistrate in Uruapan, Michoacán, but it seems that he will fail in his favor after the decision of the PGR.
