President Enrique Peña Nieto called the virtual governor of Nuevo León, independent Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, to congratulate him on his victory on Sunday's elections.
Rodríguez Calderón, nicknamed "El Bronco," thanked him for the gesture and recognized that the political reforms promoted by his government allowed him to reach the governorship by creating the figure of independent candidates.
Peña Nieto wished him the best and agreed to meet with him soon.
With 99.59% of the polls computed, Rodríguez Calderón has an advantage of more than 25 points over the ruling Revolutionary Institutional Party Ivonne Álvarez, with 23.57%, and National Action's Felipe de Jesús Cantú with 22.52%.
