The Archdiocese of Mexico described as "short-sighted" and "reductionist" the determination of the Supreme Court (SCJN) that considers unconstitutional the state and local civil codes that do not include same-sex marriage because it "dissolves" its meaning, and its purposes are broader "to the limited interpretation of the court".
In the editorial titled "The myopia of the Court" of the weekly publication "Desde la Fe," the hierarchy of the Catholic Church expressed that the determination of the SCJN indicating that the purpose of marriage is not procreation is "reductionist", and leads to "a serious hazard" that dissolves the meaning of marriage as the basis of family.
As a result, in the Metropolitan Cathedral, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera expressed that the bishops of Mexico are treated as "backward and discriminatory" because they were defending marriage, a "sacred institution".
Although the editorial acknowledged that no person may be discriminated against or deprived of their rights by his or her sexual orientation, the Catholic Church stressed that putting an end to the concept of marriage to satisfy the "lust for power of a minority group" has a "profound effect" of discrimination toward men and women in "true marriage".
