Strong winds, rain and high waves caused by hurricane Carlos, just well stepped into category one, prompted the authorities to close the ports of Acapulco and Zihuatanejo.
The head of Civil Protection in the state, Raúl Miliani Sabido, expressed in a telephone interview that "Carlos" is located 139 miles south of Acapulco and 251 miles south-southeast of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, with sustained winds of 74 miles per hour and gusts of 93 mph.
He said that in light of this meteorological phenomenon, there will be a winds and high waves watch from Acapulco to Punta San Telmo, Michoacán.
He said that it is expected that the storm will present gusts of 50 to 60 mph, mainly in the open sea.
"It is a hurricane that comes with just a little rain. There will be more strong wind and waves. The rains are expected to be from two to six inches," he said.
He mentioned that the authorities reported falling trees, one in Acapulco and another one in Tecpan de Galeana, in addition to a billboard in the tourist area of the port.
He added that more than 200 hostels are ready for the emergency, as well as the delivery of mats, pantries and blankets for the homeless in Chilpancingo, just in case.
