The heavy rains of May 24 in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, have prompted the National Coordination of Civil Protection to issue an emergency declaration for the area and activate the resources of the Fund for Emergencies (FONDEN).
The agency of the Ministry of the Interior reported that the activation of the FONDEN will mean that the authorities will have the resources needed to meet the nutritional needs and provide shelter, and health services to the affected population.
This is the second time this week that the FONDEN has been activated due to a weather emergency, after the municipality of Acuña, Coahuila, was hit by a tornado.
According to the most recent figures, 13 people died after the tornado impacted the area.
In addition, nearly a thousand homes have been damaged and the electricity supply has been interrupted due to the destruction of power lines and transformers.
